CAT AND BABY BEAR. Another adorable bear cub video via the Awl. Not to be repetitive, but this one is really something. And just when you think the cat is down for the count, think again!

This is a grizzly bear cub in a bucket. Well, partway in a bucket. But it really wants to be all the way in the bucket. That is, until it would rather eat an elbow.

A smug-looking baby dolphin enters its new pool at a Uruguay aquarium (where it makes the acquaintance of a penguin, which can be seen here).

A black bear cub is safe and happy, and foraging again, after his head was freed from a plastic bottle.
The bear, nicknamed Jarhead, and his mother and two siblings frequently raided trash bins in Weirsdale, a small town in Florida’s Ocala National Forest, says CNN. In one such raid, Jarhead got his head stuck in a plastic jar. He couldn’t eat or drink for 10 days, and was wasting away when biologists caught up to him.
Following tips from concerned townspeople, the scientists tracked the bear family and laid baited traps. The mother avoided the traps for over a week. Finally, the hunters caught up to the pack, tranquilized mama, scooped up Jarhead and, “after a brief tussle … uncorked the cub.”
Jarhead rested overnight with his groggy mom before his family was moved to a less populated part of the forest.

NEW BABY FOR 41-YEAR-OLD MOM. At the Tel Aviv Zoological Center, a 41-year-old orantutan named Rochale has given birth to a healthy new baby, much to the surprise of her keepers. Ten years ago, she gave birth to the zoo’s last orangutan arrival, and in the interim younger females have been brought in to expand the numbers, to no avail. Yay, mom!

At a preserve in Georgia, the first American zedonk, now about two weeks old, has been attracting attention. The foal is a cross between a zebra and a donkey, and keepers say she has the instincts of both. For instance, she sits up instead of lying on her side, as if she’s staying alert for predators.

Even if it’s been taken off, we’re going to sew it right back on when we win the civil case. What good is a four-legged puppy to a freak show?
Text

Allyson Siegel of Charlotte, North Carolina, shelled out $4000 to buy a five-legged puppy away from a life in a Coney Island freak show, the New York Daily News reports.
Lilly (above), a Chihuahua-terrier mix, was born with an extra leg protruding from her stomach area. Her extra foot has six toes.
John Strong, the owner of the “Freaks of Nature” museum on Surf Avenue, had promised the pup’s original owner $3000, and had already sent a $1000 down payment. In his custody, Lilly would have spent her days alongside Nosey Rosey the two-headed cow and Siamese twin turtles named Pete and Repeat.
Lucky for the tiny pup, Siegel showed up with, as the paper notes, “more bones.”
“She is beautiful, she’s not a freak, she’s a normal little puppy dog and she should be just like all the others,” Siegel said.
New Yorkers were so touched by Siegel’s move, says a followup report, that they’ve sent gifts and good wishes, and NYC veterinarian Neil Shaw has volunteered to remove Lilly’s extra leg at no cost.
