Meet Momo, Japan’s first pint-size police dog. The Chihuahua beat out more traditional K9 operatives in a test to locate a missing person in under 5 minutes. Her handlers think she’ll come in handy during earthquake-related search-and-rescues because her diminutive stature allows her to fit where other dogs cannot.

Real life Lassie battles cougar

A Golden Retriever in Canada saved her 11-year-old master from a cougar attack.

Young Austin Forman was gathering wood behind his house in Boston Bar, British Columbia, when the wild cat leapt out of the darkness.

At the same time, his faithful dog, Angel, sprang to his defense.

“The dog obviously knew something was up because she ran towards me just at the right time and the cougar ended up getting her instead,” Forman told CTV (clip below).

Soon the two animals were locked in a death match, with Angel’s head in the cat’s jaws. Austin’s mother called the police and mountie Chad Gravelle arrived at the scene to shoot the cougar dead.

Forman’s cousin pried Angel from the cat’s grasp and, he told CTV, she “sprang back to life.” The first thing she did was check on Forman.

Even if it’s been taken off, we’re going to sew it right back on when we win the civil case. What good is a four-legged puppy to a freak show?

R.I.P. Gidget, Taco Bell chihuahua

Gidget, the chihuahua who gained fame in commercials for the fast food chain Taco Bell, died tuesday night after suffering a stroke. She was 15.

“She made so many people happy,” Gidget’s trainer Sue Chipperton tells People.com.

The pup is remembered as a “consummate professional” who “delighted” the crews of her commercial shoots with her playful nature.

“One time, I kid you not, she actually pushed her stand-in out of the way because he was still there when she arrived on set,” Chipperton recalls. “Gidget always knew where the camera was.”

She spent her final years mostly retired, and her favorite activities included lying in the sun.

Five-legged pup saved from freak show

Allyson Siegel of Charlotte, North Carolina, shelled out $4000 to buy a five-legged puppy away from a life in a Coney Island freak show, the New York Daily News reports.

Lilly (above), a Chihuahua-terrier mix, was born with an extra leg protruding from her stomach area. Her extra foot has six toes.

John Strong, the owner of the “Freaks of Nature” museum on Surf Avenue, had promised the pup’s original owner $3000, and had already sent a $1000 down payment. In his custody, Lilly would have spent her days alongside Nosey Rosey the two-headed cow and Siamese twin turtles named Pete and Repeat.

Lucky for the tiny pup, Siegel showed up with, as the paper notes, “more bones.”

“She is beautiful, she’s not a freak, she’s a normal little puppy dog and she should be just like all the others,” Siegel said.

New Yorkers were so touched by Siegel’s move, says a followup report, that they’ve sent gifts and good wishes, and NYC veterinarian Neil Shaw has volunteered to remove Lilly’s extra leg at no cost.
