A CRUSTACEAN OF A DIFFERENT COLOR New Hampshire lobsterman Bill Marconi, 52, caught a rare cobalt-blue lobster in one of his 400 traps last week off the Isle of Shoals. Blue lobsters are better than others at processing astaxanthin, an antioxidant with pigment derived from algae and, according to the New England Aquarium, only one in 5 million lobsters is blue. Marconi donated his lobster to the Seacoast Science Center.

A game in which hungry diners use an automated claw to grab lobsters out of a tank has sparked outrage in the town of Royal Palm Beach, Florida.
The Love Maine Lobster Claw game (above) at the Royal Palm Ale House & Sports Bar gives patrons a chance to snag a live lobster for dinner. You feed the machine a $5 bill and, says the Miami Herald, “It uses a metal crane similar to ones used in game machines in which players try to win stuffed animals and other prizes.”
The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida organized a protest during which angry citizens gathered across the street from the restaurant with signs that proclaimed “Cruelty To Crustaceans Is Causing My Frustration” (see below). In retaliation, some of the game’s winners brandished their prize lobsters in the direction of the protest as they exited the restaurant.
Ale House owner John Baker tells the Palm Beach Post that the owner of the game comes twice a week to clean the tank, check the water quality, and replenish the lobsters. Adds Baker, “Most comments from our customers have been positive.”
